What's a good alternative to Knowunity? It depends on which part of Knowunity you use. For an AI assistant and a big study platform, Vaia (StudySmarter). For flashcard drilling, Quizlet or Knowt. For long-term memorisation, Anki. And for quizzes, flashcards and a study plan built only from your own notes, Synt. Five options compared below.
Knowunity does a lot in one app: shared school notes, an AI tutor you can chat with, quizzes, mock exams, a planner and a league system to keep you coming back. That's its appeal, and also the reason people look for alternatives: many students only use one of those pieces, or need something Knowunity isn't built for, like university material or studying strictly from their own notes.
A disclosure first: we make Synt, which is one of the five. We've tried to be as strict with it as with the others, and we say plainly where Knowunity is better. Every price and feature below was checked on the official websites and on the US App Store on 24 September 2026, with the source linked, because these pages change often.
What Knowunity gives you today
According to its US App Store listing, Knowunity has an AI chat tutor with a voice mode and photo homework help; turns PDFs, slides, photos, text, links and YouTube videos into flashcards, quizzes and summaries; builds a day-by-day plan around your test date; offers AI-scored mock exams; and adds XP and weekly leagues. The listing says the core tools are free and that there are over a million notes shared by students.
Knowunity Pro costs $49.99 a year on the US site, with weekly and monthly options, and lifts limits on AI answers, scans, attachments and study plans; test grading and «top notes» are Pro only. Prices differ by country: the UK page shows £38.99 a year, the Spanish and Italian ones €39.99 and the German one €83.99, so check yours.
The app is rated 4.7 from about 4,600 reviews in the US store and is available in 16 languages. In the US, its content is aimed at high school (SAT, ACT, AP).

1. Vaia (StudySmarter): the closest all-in-one
If you like Knowunity because it does everything, Vaia is the closest match. It comes from the team behind StudySmarter and offers a free account with flashcards, notes, study plans and AI features, plus an AI assistant you can chat with. Premium has a 7-day free trial; its help center says it adds an ad-free experience, offline flashcards, unlimited learning sets and unlimited use of the AI chat. We couldn't find a public price page, and the US App Store lists several annual price points, so check the price inside the app.
Where it differs: we couldn't confirm the exact limits of the free plan or a public Premium price, so try it before paying. The app is available in English, French, German and Spanish.
2. Quizlet: if you came for the shared material
Knowunity's community of notes is its strongest feature. If what you want is ready-made material, Quizlet has the largest library of shared study sets, an app in 17 languages and a 4.8 rating from about 1.1 million US reviews. Making and studying sets is free; Learn mode is limited per set on the free plan. Quizlet's web pricing page blocked our check on 24 September, so we quote the US in-app prices: Quizlet Plus at $9.99 and $44.99, Plus Unlimited at $44.99.
Where it differs: Quizlet is built around flashcard sets, not notes, and it has no community feed or leagues. We compare it with seven other apps in Quizlet alternatives.
3. Knowt: flashcards for free, AI for a price
Knowt gives you flashcards with unlimited Learn mode, spaced repetition and practice tests on the free plan, plus 5 million shared resources. Its AI (summaries of PDFs, videos, images and slides, lecture recordings, a voice tutor) is on Ultra: $24.99 a month or $149.99 a year, with a 3-day trial on the annual plan.
Where it differs: Knowt is English-only and focused on US exams (AP, SAT, ACT), and its AI costs about three times Knowunity Pro's US price. We looked at it closely in Knowt vs Quizlet.
4. Anki: if what you need is to remember
Knowunity's quizzes and leagues keep you busy; Anki is for committing things to long-term memory. It is free software: the desktop version is free on Windows, Mac and Linux, AnkiDroid is free on Android, and AnkiMobile for iPhone is $24.99 once. There is no AI and no community feed; you write your cards or download shared decks, and its scheduler decides when you see each one again.
Where it differs: it asks for more effort up front and pays off over months, which suits languages, medicine or any subject with a lot to memorise.
5. Synt: quizzes and a plan from your own notes
This is ours. Synt doesn't have a community of notes or a chat tutor. It starts from your material: you paste your notes, add a link or upload photos of your pages, and it generates a summary, a quiz, flashcards and a concept map from that material only. You can set your exam date and target grade, and it plans short sessions up to that day, with a review of the questions you got wrong and a mock exam the day before.
On the web, the free plan covers pasted text, links and photos of your notes, including the study plan. PDF upload and YouTube videos are Pro, at €4.99 a week, €9.99 a month or €29.99 a year with a 3-day trial; one subscription works on web and mobile, and App Store prices are set per country.
Where it differs: everything comes from your notes, so the quiz is about what your teacher actually covered, not about a public archive. But if you have no notes, Synt has nothing to work with, and it won't explain a maths problem the way Knowunity's tutor does. You can try the notes to quiz tool without an account.
Where Knowunity is still the better pick
We'd rather say it than have you find out later:
- You need material you don't have. Knowunity's shared notes are its reason to exist; Synt, Anki and Knowt can't replace them.
- You want to ask «why?». Its chat tutor and photo homework help explain problems step by step. Synt asks you questions; it doesn't answer them.
- You need the motivation of a game. XP and weekly leagues are built in; Synt has nothing like that.
How to choose
If you mostly use Knowunity's AI chat: Vaia is the closest all-in-one.
If you mostly use the shared notes and sets: Quizlet has the largest library.
If you mostly drill flashcards: Knowt for free Learn mode, Anki for serious spaced repetition.
If you have your own notes and an exam date: Synt turns those notes into quizzes, flashcards and a plan up to the day.
The app matters less than the method: testing yourself beats re-reading, which is why active recall and spaced repetition work, and a plan for the last weeks does more than any feature (we wrote up how to study for exams).
